What
combination of temperature and time is required to give a case
hardened depth of 0.75 mm for a 0.15 wt% C steel whilst carburising
with a surface concentration of 0.7 wt% C. Click on the possible

Temperature 1000°C and time 4 hrs
- Incorrect, this gives a case depth of 0.79 mm
which is greater than that required, also the
high temperature would result in a greater extent
of distortion on quenching. Try again.
Temperature 950°C and time 6 hrs
- Correct, this gives a case depth of 0.75 mm
and uses a time that will fit in well with industrial
practice, i.e. the heat treatment can be carried
out in a single shift. There is another possible
