Engineering steels for gears

Q2: Hardenability

Question A typical heat treatable engineering steel used for gears and has a composition of:
0.2 % C, 1.1% Mn, 1.1% Cr. What technique would you use to determine the hardenability of this new steel? 

 

Red cross Vickers Hardness Testing - incorrect, this technique measures the hardness of the material not the hardenability. Try again.

Red cross Brinell Hardness Testing - incorrect, this technique measures the hardness of the material not the hardenability. Try again.

Green tick Jominy End Quench Test - Correct.

Red cross Thermodynamics Computer Prediction - incorrect, thermodynamics deal with equilibrium conditions, hardenability refers to the ease with which a steel can be hardened (i.e. form martensite) which is a non-equilibrium process. However, computer methods are available for predicting hardenability from chemical composition. Try again.

Three most important properties for an engineering steel for a gear in an automotive gear box: Surface Hardness, Wear Resistance and Fatigue Resistance


Technique used to determine the hardenability of a steel: Jominy End Quench

To obtain more detailed information about the hardenability of a steel and the required processing to obtained certain properties transformation diagrams are used. It is time consuming to generate a new transformation diagram but there are many available for existing steel grades.
