Note that the treatment is equally applicable to eutectoid growth (e.g. pearlite in steels) except that lateral solute diffusion occurs in a parent phase which is solid, so that the appropriate value of D_L is several orders of magnitude smaller. This effect is partly offset, however, by the smaller DH_f value for a solid state transformation and the product Vl² is typically about 10^-18 m³ s^-1.
