Have a go imageYou can plot the results obtained from the experiment here.

• Enter your data into the spaces provided;

• When you have entered all your values, click the "Plot graph" button - the line of best fit will be drawn automatically;

• Use the cursor and the co-ordinate display above the graph to determine the gradient, l/M (mm/kg).  Further instructions are given below.

Click to use calculator Record this in your results data sheet.

• For your calculation of E, you will actually use the inverse gradient, M/l.  Calculate and record this.

Now move on to the final calculation for E.

Further instructions...

• The plotted line of best fit has a gradient which gives an average value for the quantity, l/M (mm/kg).  This is used in the calculation of the Young Modulus.

• Use the pointer to select 2 points on the line which are well apart and note their co-ordinates (shown on the top RHS of the graph) - i.e. x1 (kg), y1 (mm) and x2 (kg), y2 (mm).

• The gradient, l/M is given by equation_14.gif (444 bytes).

• Record this on the results data sheet
