The Principle of Superposition...

Superposition DiagramThis states that whenever two or more waves meet, the instantaneous total displacement at any point is equal to the vector sum of the individual displacements at that point.

Here, the two darker waves "add together" to give the third, brighter wave.   At any point along the graph, A + B = C.
