Structure Factor

  Structure Factor: Exercise     2 of 2

Have a go imageWe will now try to calculate the structure factor for a non-primitive unit cell consisting of two atoms of the same kind. Click on the animation opposite to illustrate an example.

Since exp(0) = 1

There will be particular combinations of hkl and uvw which lead to:

F = 0          -  no diffraction intensity, and
F = f1+f2    -  strong diffraction.

The structure factor is also important since the intensity of the beam diffracted by all the atoms of the unit cell is proportional to |F|2.
