Reciprocal Lattice Exercises     10 of 18

We use the notation (hkl) to designate planes in a real lattice. In a reciprocal lattice, the reciprocal lattice points (relpoints) are labeled (or indexed) the same, since they represent the planes in the real lattice. However, the round brackets are often omitted.

Have a go imageDrag the white labels from the yellow panel to index the reciprocal lattice points for the unit cell of the reciprocal lattice shown. Check your score when you have finished. Two points are already labeled to help you. The unit cell is for a monoclinic crystal.

Questions imageA infinite reciprocal lattice has a specified origin and all the other points are relative to this point. How is this different from an infinite real lattice?
