Plane Reciprocal Lattice     8 of 18

For each of the five plane lattice types which exist there is a corresponding reciprocal lattice unit cell.

Remember that the five plane lattice types are: primitive oblique, primitive rectangular, rectangular centred, primitive square, and primitive hexagonal.

Have a go imageThe five plane lattice types are shown here. Use the buttons on the left hand side to select a lattice type. Change the size of the unit cell vectors a and b by dragging the white lattice points. Notice the corresponding effect on shape of the reciprocal lattice unit cell.

Questions imageWhich of the following statements is true for all plane lattice types?:

a* is always parallel to a, and b* is always parallel to b

a* is always perpendicular to b, and b* always perpendicular to a

a* is always perpendicular to a, and b* always perpendicular to b
