Learning Objectives:

After completing this section you should be able to

  • state and use Bragg's equation;
  • construct reciprocal lattices for two or three dimensional crystal;
  • index reciprocal lattices;
  • interpret the diffraction pattern from a single crystal in terms of the Ewald sphere construction; and
  • explain the finite size and shape of reciprocal lattice points for thin samples of crystals.
