Diffraction Pattern Exercises

  Diffraction Patterns: Indexing Exercise

Instructions:

  1. Choose one of the patterns from the menu at the bottom and make a note of your selection.
  2. Sketch the pattern in your note or lab book.
  3. Move the mouse over the pattern.  The current distance, r and angle f from the centre are displayed below the pattern.
  4. Use the ratio technique to index the pattern.  Use the table of ratios for the appropriate crystal structure (fcc or bcc).
  5. Now determine the zone axis by calculating the vector product of any two spots.
  6. Repeat for all the different patterns.
