How much energy is stored?
Previous Up Next

Have a go imageChange the charging voltage using the slider and see how it affects the motor's operation as the capacitor discharges.

Record your results on the results data sheet.

Look at the results you have recorded. Can you spot a pattern or relationship?

Definitions imageThe work done by the motor = the gain in potential energy of the mass as it is raised:
\W = mgh
Since mass and gravity are constant:
W µ h
so the work done can be represented by h.

From the results you should see that:

h µ V2
W µ V2

But, the work done by motor = energy transferred by capacitor, so the energy stored in the capacitor, E, is such that:

E µ V2
E = constant × V2

So what is this constant?
