There are some practical issues which limit capacitor design. If we wish to make the capacitor reasonably compact then the plate area has to be limited. Thus the other two factors, the separation must be minimised and the and dielectric permittivity maximised. One snag however arises when a large voltage is applied across two plates with a very small separation distance. The dielectric can "break down" and become conductive so the capacitor will no longer store charge.
Capacitors are thus marked with a maximum working voltage. |
